Co-operatives United 2012 – Small Co-operative, Big Achiever Award – 31 October 2012

The awards were held on 31st October 2012 at the G-Mex in Manchester with over 900 attendees from Co-operative businesses worldwide. These awards now in their 4th year recognise excellence, innovation and impact of co-operatives and mutual across the country.

There were 3 main award categories

Co-operative of the Year Award, for overall excellence in relation to performance on all aspects of running a successful co-operative.

The #coops2012 Award, for the co-operative which has actively used a variety of media (radio, press and social media) to promote how their co-operative is building a better world through co-operation during 2012.

Small Co-operative, Big Achiever Award, for a small co-operative, with a turnover of up to £5 million that has made a big impact with an innovative project or projects.

We were one of three organization’s shortlisted in the last category; Small Co-operative, Big Achiever Award

Unfortunately we were pipped at the post by Equal Exchange Limited. This coop operates in 27 countries and has been around since 1978. It supports female led co-operatives around the world packing fair-trade products at source, adding revenues, employment and new skills in the areas its members operate.

We were told on the night that we ran a very close second and had submitted an excellent application. Given the quality and size of the other shortlisted organization’s we certainly gave them a good run for their money.

The co-operatives uk website brief resume on our application states:

Lyvennet Community Pub has demonstrated that it really can think big with the local community providing the £300,000 capital needed to purchase the pub. The pub continues to go from strength to strength and is now owned by 298 people, 54% drawn from the local area whilst others support the pub from every corner of globe from the Shetland Isles to the USA.

The Co-ops mobile exhibition was yet again on display at the entrance to the G-Mex and the Butchers Opening photograph was up there for everyone to be seen.
