The Butchers Arms is a very successful community pub with a local, national and international following. The pub was purchased and renovated by shareholders in 2011 and at that time was the 6th cooperative pub in the country. There are now over 30, with a regular stream of groups coming to explore our community ownership model.

Due to the planned share withdrawal by one of our corporate funders we have a small number of shares available. Do not miss your opportunity to become an investor.

The minimum shareholding is £250 and over the last two years the LCP has paid shareholder interest at 3%.

Please note that by completing a membership form at this point you are not committing yourself to buy a share simply lodging an interest.

Assistant Chef

We are a Busy Country Pub serving Fresh Local Home Cooked Produce & are seeking an Assistant Chef to support the Head Chef/Owner to maintain & improve the current food offering.

You will need to have previous experience in the preparation & cooking of Fresh Food & be able to cover for the Head Chef during holidays/days off. You must have a ‘hands on’ approach & be flexible & able to work evenings & weekends. Reliability & commitment essential. Own transport is essential due to location.

Hours will vary between 25-30 weekly average, up to full time when covering holidays. Good rates of pay negotiable dependent on experience.

Welcome to Andy and Michelle at The Butchers Arms

A bit of news from the pub, Keith and Bev moved out on Sunday and I think everyone will remember them fondly for their great service and fantastic food and drink, including Keith’s legendary Lamb Henry. They served us very well indeed.

Now it’s time to welcome Andy and Michelle, the new hosts at Crosby Ravensworth’s The Butchers Arms

Keys exchanged on Monday at 9am, Andy and Michelle took over the establishment.

Building work took place Mon, Tue, Wed and Thursday morning

The pub re-opened the bar at 5pm yesterday for drinks only.

 Food will be served again starting Sept 13th

Butchers Arms – Tenancy

It’s hard to believe that this August will see us celebrating the 3rd anniversary of the opening of the Butchers Arms!
Our original 3 year lease with Keith Taylor and Bev Percy expires at the end of July this year (they took up occupation on 1st July 2011 to allow then to prepare the business for the grand opening on 27th August). We are in the process of extending this lease by 1 month to 31st August 2014.
The Board have been in discussion with Keith and Bev over lease renewal for some weeks but have to report that we have been unable to reach a conclusion acceptable to both parties. It is in the light of this, that the Directors have therefore taken the decision to progress advertising of the tenancy with immediate effect.
Securing tenants and their establishment in the pub on 1st September 2014 is absolutely critical for the Butchers Arms, and the continued success of the pub. Obviously this process needs to go ahead as soon as possible to give the LCP Directors time to vet candidates and most importantly allow potential tenants who may already be in a leased pub time to serve notice.
Adverts will appear shortly on our website, in the Butchers Arms and in all local papers as will hopefully news items which can be utilised to drum up interest.
From the Directors perspective we see the advertising of the business tenancy as an opportunity to both explore tenant interest and potentially to move the business on to the next level. It is worthy of note that the Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket has changed its tenants on three occasions with the level of interest rising dramatically with each change.
The Directors will of course consider an application from the existing tenants should they decide to express an interest during the process.

Butchers Arms Update 30 October 2013

How time flies! The last update we posted on our website for the Butchers Arms was 15th July 2013 when we reported on the 2nd Annual General Meeting. In the final section of the meeting we outlined the next 12 months work which included the completion of a dry store and upstairs meeting / dining room

Works have progressed well over the summer with the new Dry Store fully complete. This is part of the old garage building which has been split to provide a storage area for food, soft drinks, equipment and fridge freezers. The new store has been lined and insulated, walls rendered, painted with a new floor screed laid. The photographs below show the improvements from before and after works were completed.

               The upstairs dining and meeting space has also been progressed and we are working towards an end November 2013 opening. The requisite fire escape has been constructed leading from the stairs half landing through a newly installed doorway onto a painted and galvanised steel fire escape.

The electrically operated fire blind at the bottom of the stairs has been installed although we are currently having some minor teething problems. The blind is linked to the fire alarm system and automatically drops when the alarm system operates, or at least that is the theory!  By the time the upstairs room is ready for commissioning we are confident that the technical issues will be resolved.

We have removed walls between two of the upstairs bedrooms, our electricians have carried out their first fix, the ceiling has been re-boarded, new radiators installed and work has started on installing the new fire doors required to meet fire regulations. At the time of writing this article the room is being completely re-plastered.

The carpet fitters are booked for 19th November so the joinery work, second fix electrical and painting and decorating teams are under pressure.

When finished the room which has fantastic views through three windows over open fields to the East and will have a capacity of 20-30 being bookable for parties, family gatherings, meetings etc. The latter is supported by a grant recently awarded to the Lyvennet Activity Group; the lunch club group which has now purchased 6 laptops, an A4/A5 wireless printer / scanner, flip chart, projector and screen. The Group are currently advertising computer training which will be run initially from the Butchers.

The Beer Garden will be temporarily closed during the renovation of the pipingAs if that was not enough we are also part way through connecting the pub up to the new village sewerage scheme. Like most jobs this has proved more complex than expected with the multitude of connections for the pub all flowing the wrong direction along with broken drainage pipes under the property. We are basically rerouting all foul drainage to the outside of the building with the intention of abandoning all under building drainage. This will ensure no future maintenance issues but does involve considerably more work. We are also replacing all upstairs bathroom pipework moving from a macerator system to a full 100mm piped system. A consequence of this work has been the closure of our beer garden and smoking shelter with the area resembling a battlefield made all the worse by heavy rainfall.

The kitchen will also get a state of the art stainless steel fat trap to ensure all fats and solids are captured for disposal and do not enter the sewerage system. Finally roof water has to be separated and rerouted and the septic tank de-commissioned.

We have also commissioned some secondary glazing for 8 of the windows which should reduce drafts and help minimise heating costs.
